The practice of euthanasia differs from country to country. In most countries euthanasia is not legal because it involves different aspects such as religion, ethics, morality, but it is a subject that is increasingly discussed in parliaments.

Holand

In this country, euthanasia has been tolerated for about 50 years, but it was only in 2002 that it was legalized. It was the first country to legalize this practice that is done in a very stricted way. Doctors have to follow a set of specific rules and the condition of the patient must be full with regard to mental health. Children under the age of 12 may resort to euthanasia if their parents accept it.

Belgium

Belgium was the second country to legalize euthanasia, also in 2002. In 2014 the Belgian law on euthanasia was renewed, from that year, anyone, regardless of age can request this practice. The patient must be discerning to decide, have an incurable disease and must be the patient himself to make the request or in the case of minors, their legal representatives.

Suice

It is one of the countries that we most associate to euthanasia, due to the mediatism of organizations like the Dignitas, nevertheless the euthanasia in this country is forbbiden. What is legal is assisted suicide, the patient has to end with their own life with the help of the doctor. The same happens in Luxembourg. In Germany it is similar, and the doctor can prescribe a lethal drug for his patient if he is terminally ill.

Canada

The legislation for the decriminalization of Euthanasia took place in 2015 but only came into force in June 2016, and it became legal.

United States of America

In the United States it is considered a crime, but assisted suicide is allowed in five states: Oregon in 1997, Washington and Montana in 2009, Vermont in 2013 and California in 2015. In these five states the legislation is similar, so patients have to be major, have an incurable disease, a prediction of less than six months of life and present the request verbally and written.

Spain

Spain is considered as one of the first countries to discuss this subject in 1920. This practice continues to be illegal in this country, however, in June this year was approved a project law in order to regulate euthanasia.

Portugal

Euthanasia, as well as assisted suicide are illegal in Portugal and punished by articles 134 and 135 of the Penal Code. This issue was discussed in May 2018 in Parliament, where four projects law were presented.
